GMR Varalakshmi Centre for Empowerment and Livelihoods, an initiative of the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation – the corporate social responsibility arm of the GMR Group – was formally inaugurated today by Mr. Ashok Chawla, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation in the presence of Mr. G. M. Rao, Chairman - GMR Group.
Established as a dedicated centre for training and empowerment of youth, the residential centre, located in the airport premises, will train about 600 youth every year in various skills and vocations.
Along with skill training, inputs like personality development, communications skills, Basic English and computer skills will be imparted to the trainees. The effort will be to give the youth not only skills which will help them gain employment but also transform them as professionals. Most courses are residential.
Unemployed youth and school/college dropouts from villages around the Airport will be selected for the training programmes. The training is imparted according to curriculum based on inputs from the industry. Regular systems of tests and monitoring of the learning of the students, including by external experts, are in place. Course-end examinations are conducted for all courses.
The Training Centre is fully equipped with four classrooms, seminar rooms, library, et al. Apart from four dormitories which can accommodate 100 students; a hygienic, modern kitchen serves nutritious meals to all students. The trainees undergoing the programmes get all these facilities completely free.
After the training, interviews are organized with potential employers for placement of the students. The trainees are followed up for a period of a year, to support them through the process of settling down in the job, and sorting out any problems that may arise.
GMRVF is proud to have several partners who are helping this training centre. Voltas is supporting the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning course through technical inputs including curriculum development, field exposure for trainees and training of the trainer. National Academy of Construction is jointly running courses related to the construction industry. Heritage Hospitals is providing the technical inputs for the training of Bedside Patient Attendants. Discussions are in advanced stages with Accor Hotels for partnership on hospitality-related courses. Team Lease is helping with the placements.
