Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad.
08 September. 2008, Hyderabad
With reference to Sunday's incident of gold heist at Shamshabad, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), the operator of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), would like to give the following update to media:

The gold heist on September 7 took place outside the business area of cargo operations (cargo complex). The onus for safe transportation of the consignment, after taking delivery against clean signature and moving out of the Cargo complex is on the importer. However, taking cognizance of the incident and to further beef up the security measures at the airport vicinity, the airport operator (GHIAL) held detailed discussions with the police and came up with the following action points:
Police outposts at both the entry points to the airport— National Highway 7 (Hyderabad-Bangalore highway) and the entrance from Srisailam State Highway (Hyderabad-Srisailam road) will be set up.
It was also decided to arrange police patrolling on the main access road.
It was agreed to have closer coordination between RAXA (the security wing of the airport operator which is incharge of security on the internal roads of the airport) and the police for enhanced monitoring.
Several medium and long-term measures were also discussed. These include dividing the airport premises into zones for better monitoring, strengthening of the communications network with induction of more devices, stepping up the surveillance by increasing the number of CCTV cameras on the airport premises from the existing 450 and information- and data-sharing between the security wing of the airport operator and the police.

Mr. A Viswanath, Chief Commercial Officer and Mr.RP Singh, Head (Security), GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, said: “We are constantly monitoring the security measures in coordination with the State police and the above measures are to offer a Safe, Secure and pleasant experience to the passengers.”
